3 Signs That You've Found a Great Personal Injury Lawyer

personal-injury1

The personal injury space is one of the most saturated and competitive areas in law, and you'll find a personal injury lawyer on virtually every corner in any major city in the country. They'll even come to your door if you've suffered an injury. Finding a good personal injury lawyer can be overwhelming, but there are a few things that you can look out for that will tell you immediately whether you're dealing with someone competent. Let's take a look at some of the signs of a personal injury lawyer you can trust.

They Have a Good Track Record Both with Settlements and Judgments

One of the first things you want to do is check how often the lawyer takes cases to court versus settling. This is very important as some law firms will try to push for a settlement as soon as possible or only go to trial for major cases. This is also why you shouldn't be overly impressed with mega-judgments. If your case is minor, you want someone that will be willing to go to court no matter what if that is what is right.

Look at the judgments they have won as well as the amounts. If they've got a good mix of small and big judgments, that's a good sign. Note that settling is not necessarily a bad thing either, and personal injury lawyers who are great at negotiation could allow you to avoid the hassles of going to court and possibly even end up with more money in your pocket.

They're Attentive

Another sign of a great personal attorney is attentiveness and empathy. You have to work with a lawyer who cares for you and is willing to explain every step in detail, even if you have some difficulties understanding them.

You also have to check that the person you see on your first meeting is the lawyer that will represent you. In some cases, firms will send a lawyer that is great at closing clients, then delegate your case to someone else, so make sure to ask them if they are the one who will be handling the case.

Also, ask how you'll be able to reach them if you have any issues. You can't expect a busy lawyer to be at your beck and call 24/7, but if they give you multiple ways in which you can contact them, and resources you can reach if you can't get to them, this is a good sign.

They Have Experience Working with Your Type of Case

If the attorney has experience working with your type of case specifically, this is another great sign. The world of personal injury is so incredibly vast and you have lawyers that specialize in everything from product liability cases claims, to truck accidents, to even theme park accidents. It doesn't mean that the lawyer you pick has to be ultra-specialized, but they still need to have some experience working on cases that are at least similar to yours.

If you find a personal injury lawyer that exhibits all of these traits, you may have found a good match. Most importantly, they need to have the right expertise and be willing to represent you every step of the way no matter how big or small your case is.
